Damian James' Blog: 9 February 2009 - Not more snow!

Date: 09 February 2009

I heard on the news about the motorists stuck overnight on the A38 at Haldon Hill just outside Exeter. As I was born in Exeter this is my local territory and I know this road very well.

It's the sort of hill where you start at the bottom with clear weather and as you drive further up you go into low cloud and the visibility drops down to a few meters. In this case it appears the cloud contained snow and it proceeded to dump it at an alarming rate and this is what caught out these poor drivers.

It's a fairly bleak (and very picturesque) place at the best of times so I can imagine that some drivers may have thought they would never get back down again.

Whilst I have been battling my way into work this week I have been amazed at how many drivers don't seem to alter their driving style to suit the weather conditions. There is a small patch of dual carriageway on my commute and even though the outside lane was covered in snow and slush earlier this week some drivers were still determined to use it to pass a few cars. Unfortunately by the time some drivers realise they can't stop it's too late and then you all know what that means because it's usually not just the bent metal that has to be fixed.

Looking at the latest weather forecast the snow hasn't finished yet so its spades, blankets and more looking out for inconsiderate drivers, in preparation for another dollop next week.
