New Volvo system detects swerving cyclists

Date: 20 March 2013   |   Author: Jack Carfrae

Volvo has developed a new cyclist detection system designed to avoid swerving bikers.

A combination of software and sensors form the basis of the technology, which is able to detect when a cyclist travelling in the same direction as the car veers in front and applies the brakes automatically.

It also applies the brakes if it detects a vehicle stopping suddenly in the same lane. It will be available with the V40, S60, V60, XC60, V70, XC70 and S80 from May, which are already offered with pedestrian detection.

The technology is a development of Volvo's Autonomous Emergency Braking System (AEB).
