Awards 2009 - Executive: BMW 5-series

Date: 27 January 2009

It's nine wins out of 11 for BMW in this category as the 5-series reclaims its position as our top executive car.

Audi grabbed the prize in 2008 and Mercedes' E-class has 2003's trophy in its cabinet, but this year the 5-series has proved too strong once again.

The 520d is a key reason why BMW has been so successful in this segment. The car's 177PS 2.0-litre engine combines emissions of only 136g/km with acceleration to 60mph in 8.3 seconds. But the 5-series wouldn't be half as successful as it is if the 520d was its only trick. Even the six-cylinder 530d and 535d manage ratings of 170 and 178g/km respectively.

If petrol is your potion of choice, then drivers are positively spoilt with no engine in the range offering fewer than six cylinders. With the brutishly powerful M5 saloon sitting at the top of the 5-series range, BMW really does have all possibilities catered for in this sector.
